Cassie’s Senior Spotlight

Meet Cassie from Canada, who attended ICSB for 4 years in this Senior Spotlight.ย

What have you been involved in at ICSB?

Yearbook! NHS, musical (cast and crew)

Share about a teacher(s) and how they have impacted you positively.

Mrs. Cooper was the first teacher at ICSB whom I got to know and really love spending time with. When I was a new student, the school was a strange, unfamiliar place where I didn’t know anyone. In the yearbook, Mrs. Cooper welcomed us with open arms and much love, which was exactly what I needed at that time. Ever since then, the yearbook has been my highlight of every day, not just because of the work (though that is fun), but because of the cooperative, friendship-based atmosphere Mrs. Cooper brings to the room.

Mrs. Mรกrton is another teacher who has brought lots of fun into my life. As one of my class sponsors, she has been a familiar face to me since Day One. She is always ready to laugh and ask questions about each student she interacts with. I love spending time in her classroom, drawing on the board, just chatting, or talking over deeper topics. (She also introduced me to Brussels sprouts, which may be the best thing she ever did.)

I’ll always remember my freshman year English class, where Mrs. Culbertson ruled the house. Sadly, that was the only year-long class I’ve had with her, but even so, she has impacted me greatly. Always ready for a discussion or debate, Mrs. Culbertson fosters a place of learning wherever she goes. Every chat in OAF, bible class discussion, or group talk in bible study is filled with a love that she has for each of her students. She makes each student feel special, not only because she treats them that way, but because she truly sees how unique and precious each one of her students is.

Whatโ€™s your favorite thing or memory about ICSB?

I have many amazing memories at ICSB, some happy, some sad, and some… interesting. But the thing I love most about this school is how the teachers and students interact. Here, students really do want to be friends with their teachers, and both parties actively cultivate friendships in a healthy way.

Share a favorite book you read while you were a student at ICSB? And why did you like it?

One of my favorite books I’ve read at ICSB is “Skyward” (it’s the first in a series of four) by Brandon Sanderson. I don’t often prefer sci-fi media but the way that Skyward talks through friendship, trust, commitment, and trust is a dynamic and engaging reminder about some of the most important values we can have.

What has been the highlight of your senior year?

There have been many good moments, but I’ll forever be grateful for getting the chance to chat with Cami, Kayleigh, and Lydia in Outdoor Aerobic Fitness. The class might not be as much of a break as I wanted, but it’s worth it to learn about and talk to some of my favorite people at this school.

What are some of the ways youโ€™ve grown since you first came to ICSB?

Since my family fled Ukraine to Hungary due to the second invasion, I have learned a lot by coming here. One of the most impactful things I’ve learned is that no matter the situation, God is in control. He put you here on Earth, right where you are, for a reason, and He will provide for you in every moment. “Good or bad, it’s the Plan of God.”

Will you be attending college next year?

No

What are your future plans?

Gifts we want to give our children

We often tell our kids we’re on their team. Every choice we make is considering them. These are the gifts we’re working to give them โ€” not wrapped in paper, but built into their lives.

Child playing piano

Gift 01

The ability to create music

Music is a language of its own. We want our kids to know how to make it โ€” not just listen to it.

Student studying with ambition

Gift 02

A strong work ethic and ambition

We want them to show up, to try hard, and to care about doing things well โ€” whatever they put their hands to.

Children learning a language

Gift 03

The ability to communicate in more than one language

Language opens doors โ€” to people, cultures, and places. Exposure to more than one is a gift that keeps giving.

Saving money wisely

Gift 04

Wisdom in using financial resources

Not just how to earn money, but how to steward it well โ€” with generosity, patience, and good judgment.

Family hiking in mountains

Gift 05

A sense of adventure and love for beautiful places

We want them to get outside, explore, and develop a real sense of wonder for the world God made.

People caring for one another

Gift 06

A desire to love God and love others

Above everything else on this list, this is what we want their lives to be shaped by.

Person thinking critically

Gift 07

The ability to think well

Discerning truth from deception โ€” especially in news, media, and the arts. We want them to be thoughtful, not just informed.

Child sleeping peacefully

Gift 08

Self-discipline in screens, food, and sleep

The basics matter more than we often admit. We’re trying to help them build healthy rhythms that will serve them for life.

Gift 09

Strong family roots and ties

We want them to know where they come from and to feel deeply connected โ€” to us, to each other, and to the story they’re part of.

Gift 10

The opportunity to study what they love

We want to provide for them the opportunity to learn something they would love to do for a vocation that has meaning and blesses the world they live in, this often includes college and we want them prepared for that.

Open Bible

Gift 11

A love for God’s Word

Not just knowing it’s important, but actually wanting to read it. We hope it becomes something they reach for daily, on their own.

Child cooking in kitchen

Gift 12

Independence and basic life skills

Cooking, cleaning, sewing, gardening, building โ€” and more. We want them to be capable, confident people who can take care of themselves and others.

This list isn’t exhaustive โ€” but it reflects what we hope to pass on. We are on our kids’ team, every single day.

Our Family Traditions

Every family has a rhythm โ€” those little rituals and recurring moments that, when you look back, end up defining your life together more than almost anything else. Here’s a peek at ours, season by season.

๐ŸŒฑ Spring

Spring starts indoors for us โ€” we plant seeds inside first and watch them sprout on the windowsill before eventually moving them outside to the garden. It’s a slow, hopeful kind of tradition. Spring is also when most of the kids’ birthdays fall, so it’s a season full of celebrations, birthday parties, and a lot of cake.

โ˜€๏ธ Summer

Summer is full. We do the Rollkuchen, slice into watermelon, and follow the Winnipeg Bombers (even from overseas). And camping at Blue Lake and Five Cabins is one of those anchoring summer traditions we come back to year after year.

๐Ÿ‚ Fall

First day of school photos โ€” every year, no exceptions. Then Thanksgiving, which we love to share with Canadians (or really anyone who needs a table if there are no Canadians nearby). Pumpkin pie is non-negotiable. And when the mood strikes, we’ve been known to make a batch of homemade applesauce.

โ„๏ธ Winter

Hockey season means following the Winnipeg Jets. Come Christmas, the house smells like cinnamon buns โ€” we make them every year. And New Year’s Eve? Fondue and a murder mystery envelope. It’s become one of those traditions that everyone looks forward to more than they probably admit.

๐Ÿ”„ All year long

Reading before bed. Reading the Bible at dinner โ€” we did this more faithfully when the kids were younger, but it still shows up. Weekend adventures: hiking, biking, exploring wherever the road takes us. Weekend breakfasts like waffles, and an open-door policy for brunch. We love having people over. And every birthday, we sign each other’s birthday books โ€” a small thing that adds up to something really meaningful over the years.

41 more days.

That is what Kai told us today when he got home from school. 41 more days. I don’t know if that is specific school days left, but it is really hard to imagine that the end of this school year is coming up so fast, because it is the first time we will graduate one of our kids. Cassie’s class will have parties, celebrations, and even a class trip, all the while, her parents will celebrate with her, and mourn a little too!

Christmas 2025

We had a great Christmas break including our friends Vovka and Yulia from Ukraine visiting, an Agatha Christie play that Cassie and I went to see, the annual skating on Boxing day, Jay playing in the alumni games at school and fondue on New Years Eve. And yet, in the midst of it all, thinking about how that the light that came into the world so many years ago, is the same light that is needed today – not only in Ukraine where it is physically dark, but in the hearts of many, including ours. Lord Jesus shine your light bright into every corner of our world. Your kingdom come!

Ready to Help

One of our family values is, โ€œWe offer to help.โ€ This is one of the ways that Cassie shines! Yesterday I was not feeling very well, but Cassie made sure to come in after school and see if she could help me with dinner or anything else. She really shows empathy and love so easily.

Another example is this photo taken on New Yearโ€™s Eve. We do a chocolate fondue every new years eve, and Cassie always helps to cut everything up, get the chocolate ready, and make it all look beautiful! Our family just wouldnโ€™t have that special touch without her!

Summer is almost over!

It is August 11, school starts again for the kids in 12 days! That means we have to get organized, cleaned up and supplied for the first day! Always an exciting day! We bought the kids their new school shoes from Ashan (like Walmart) and put them aside for the first day of school. The kids are all excited!

It has been a fun summer, we have tried to organize fun things that didn’t cost too much money, along with some special events like a ballet, a water park and Ninja house. Of course there was a lot of down time too, just hanging around, reading books, playing and of course sibling arguments, all of the good stuff that summers are made from. We did our best to limit screen time to 60 minutes a week, sometimes adding a few extra videos on extra hot days or when Mom was going crazy.

Life didn’t slow down for Ben with the SBS, lots of people studying the Bible and getting closer to God. It has been fun, but I would also say a bit tiring. We are looking forward to a few days break for our 15th anniversary in September.

Hope your summer was a fun and fulfilling as ours!

ps. We had an awesome roofing team come from Canada and help us put a new roof on one of our YWAM buildings. It was from Ben’s sister’s church, so that was SUPER special!!!

Canadian Thanksgiving in Ukraine

img_2861What did you do for Thanksgiving this year? Well, every year we endeavor to help our kids have a sense of identity, and specifically Canadian in certain ways. One of the ways we do that is by celebrating the holidays.
This past Monday we invited Abby (another YWAMer who is Canadian) and we had a great time eating Turkey (just wings and legs that we could buy at the store) mashed potatoes, cinnamon carrots, corn, gravy, and pumpkin cheesecake. It was yummy. But the real highlight was drawing turkeys using the website ‘art for kids hub.’ It was a lot of fun. Of course we sang our national anthem and said things we were thankful for. One thing we are really thankful for as a family is the house we are able to live in and host meals like this in. Thank you again to everyone who prayed with us and contributed to this home. It is a blessing to our family and many others as well.

Western Ukraine Road Trip

Castle 2 Usually our vacation time is spent either in Canada or in a neighbouring country. BUT this year we decided to stay in Ukraine and visit a few smaller cities the West. After our trip we asked the kids, what were your highlights?

Cassie: Doing the Quest Room in Rivne. It was really challenging and I like a challenge! I felt like Nancy Drew…especially finding the secret room.

Kai: I love all the stuff that we go to…the castle, the quest room…

Jay: I loved the quest room because there were so many riddles and mysteries. The pottery guy at the castle was cool too!ย Quest Room

What about you Ben?

Ben: All of it was good.ย

A man of little words.

I enjoyed spending time together in the car. Colouring… reading books…mediating fights (“I want to sit in the middle.” “No I do!”

Another highlight was that we were joined by Thelma and Esther. Two of our team members! Thelma is from India, Esther is new to our team and is from America. Both have never travelled around Western Ukraine, so we all gained more of an appreciation for the country in which we serve.

Now we look forward to some awesome days together with our YWAM Kyiv Staff, planning and praying for this coming year. Titus Project begins again in just a few weeks where we will train new Bible Teachers. And the kids will go back to school. Kai is hoping to go to preschool beginning this January with Jay. Mom and Dad are still deciding.

Happy New Year!

Easter

IMG_5050We started Easter with a sunrise service – yup – even the kiddos climbed out of bed at 5am to be downtown to celebrate with our church when the sun came up. Why do such a thing? Because the very best thing in our life, the presence of God, was made real by the innocent death of Jesus and his resurrection. The events that we celebrate at Easter define our lives, not just the work we do but our very purpose and joy in life.IMG_5056ย Of course, like most people we want our kids to enjoy our celebrations too so at 8 in the morning we had our friends over for a special breakfast and the kids got to hunt for psanky (Ukrainian painted eggs). There may or may not have been some chocolate involved too.

Another Memory Maker

IMG_4817A week ago we all started getting feverish. Hello winter flu! Thankfully no throwing up, but lots of coughing, noses running and of course grumpy attitudes. It didn’t help that we didn’t go anywhere not wanting to infect the masses. Well, by Saturday we couldn’t handle it any more. We needed some fun! So we had a special waffle brunch with smoothies, followed by toy Story 2 and peanut butter chocolate chip cookies. A little later we all went outside, built a fire, captured some worms, and ate hotdogs. A fun family day (we all just had to ignore the hacking that Mom and Dad were doing, I’d call it coughing, but that would be misleading). Spring please come soon!

Memory Maker #2

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Well, actually there is no snow yet and its just getting cold but since we’re putting up the Christmas tree on Friday, we decided that we gotta make some ornaments!

Yes, the kids dumped in the ingredients and stirred up the dough and had a blast with the cookie cutters. It’s going to be a great Christmas!

Memory Maker One

Memory Maker
Star Date 4207
Pizza and Pepsi, Ice Cream and a Movie

We’ve started a new family tradition. Once every week or two, we will have a specific family event called a Memory Maker. The purpose is to do something that makes family memories. The event isn’t the important but doing something together and making some memories. Sometimes as simple as a special movie, roasting marshmallows or going bowling. Every Memory Maker will include a photo. At the end of this year we will take all the photos and put them into a book which will become something of a family album!

Today was our first Memory Maker. We ate frozen pizza’s, of course they taste better frozen. Just joking. And it wasn’t Pepsi, it was Coca Cola. And then we all sat on the couch and watched Toy Story together and mom brought us some ice cream. What a great night! Jay even cleaned up the bowls after the movie was done – all on his own, without anyone suggesting it. Kaiser was in a great mood and Cass even held him for a bit during the movie. Ang put it all together! And Ben enjoyed holding his kids. So thankful to have each other!
