Dnipropetrovsk (Russian: Днепропетровск) is Ukraine’s fourth largest city by population. Centuries ago the region was settled by Zaporizhzhya Cossacks but the city was founded by the Russian Empress Catherine the Great. Dnipropetrovsk, then named Yekaterislav, was supposed to become the Russian Empire’s third most influential city after St Petersburg and Moscow. Currently it boasts Europe’s longest embankment (23km) and is also known as Ukraine’s aerospace hub.
